Communication and Teamwork in Healthcare

Effective communication and teamwork are essential components of safe, high-quality healthcare delivery. Communication failures remain among the leading causes of preventable adverse events, medical errors, and patient harm across healthcare settings. Nurses play a critical role in facilitating communication among patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to promote coordinated, patient-centered care. 

This continuing nursing education activity provides nurses with an evidence-based review of communication principles, teamwork strategies, interdisciplinary collaboration, structured communication tools, and patient-centered communication techniques. Participants will examine common barriers to effective communication, explore strategies to improve collaboration among healthcare professionals, and learn practical approaches to enhance patient outcomes through effective teamwork. 

The course emphasizes the application of evidence-based communication models, including SBAR, closed-loop communication, active listening, teach-back methods, and TeamSTEPPS principles. Clinical case studies and real-world examples are incorporated to support practical applications in diverse healthcare settings.
