Patient Education and Health Literacy in Nursing Practice

Patient education is a fundamental responsibility of nurses and plays a critical role in promoting health, preventing disease, improving treatment adherence, and enhancing patient outcomes. Effective patient education empowers individuals to actively participate in their healthcare, make informed decisions, and successfully manage acute and chronic health conditions. Health literacy significantly influences a patient’s ability to understand health information, navigate healthcare systems, and follow treatment recommendations. 

Nurses serve as educators, advocates, and communicators who must assess learning needs, identify barriers to understanding, and implement evidence-based teaching strategies tailored to individual patients. Inadequate patient education and limited health literacy are associated with medication errors, poor disease management, increased hospitalizations, healthcare disparities, and adverse health outcomes. 

This continuing nursing education activity provides an evidence-based review of patient education principles, health literacy, communication strategies, cultural considerations, patient engagement, and methods for evaluating learning effectiveness. Participants will explore the nurse’s role in promoting patient understanding and improving health outcomes through effective education and communication practices.
