Substance Abuse and Addiction Awareness for Nurses

Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a significant public health concern affecting individuals, families, communities, and healthcare systems. Nurses frequently encounter patients experiencing substance misuse, substance dependence, addiction, withdrawal, and recovery across various healthcare settings. Early identification, evidence-based interventions, compassionate care, and appropriate referrals can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce the health consequences associated with substance use disorders.

This continuing nursing education activity provides nurses with an evidence-based overview of substance abuse, addiction, screening and assessment, treatment approaches, recovery support, stigma reduction, and the nurse’s role in prevention and intervention. Participants will examine biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors contributing to substance use disorders and learn strategies to support patients throughout the continuum of care.

Through case studies and practical applications, nurses will strengthen their ability to recognize substance use disorders, provide nonjudgmental care, promote patient safety, and contribute to recovery-oriented healthcare practices.
